Inspiring Impactful Change
WHO WE ARE
Community Health Initiatives is a Colorado based nonprofit organization that expanded its reach to the State of Connecticut in 2021.
The Connecticut chapter runs our FOCUS (Families Overcoming Under Stress) program. FOCUS is an evidence based program originally developed by UCLA and Harvard and has been tested extensively in the United States Navy.
FOCUS has been developed for military families, veterans and service members,
first responders, Individuals and families coping with stress and trauma from cancer, families raising children with special needs and adoptive families.
The FOCUS program uses six to eight skills-building modules delivered over 8-12 sessions. When possible, the whole family is encouraged to participate in the program. FOCUS can be delivered virtually to work with families busy schedules and long distance relationships .
HOW FOCUS HELPS PEOPLE TO HEAL
Meaningful Work
EMOTION REGULATION
Family members learn to better understand their emotions and a common emotional language to make it easier to communicate with one another. Parents learn skills to help them identify emotional reactions their children might have, such as being worried, sad and fearful.
COMMUNICATION
Family members learn to actively listen and respond to one another’s concerns. They learn how to express feelings, talk to each other, and deal with unique challenges related to a family member’s experiences. Parents also learn how to address their children’s possible trauma and their concerns when their feelings and emotions are hard for their children to understand.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Families learn how to clearly define problems and implement effective solutions, as well as ways to handle day-to-day challenges, while recognizing and building upon their existing strengths.
GOAL SETTING
Families, individuals and couples learn how to set and take steps towards achievable goals. Parents learn to work better as a team in parenting their children.
MANAGING TRAUMA REMINDERS
Family members learn how to develop a plan together to deal effectively with trauma reminders.

CHI is a 501 (c) (3) All donations are tax deductible.
The funds you provide to support the FOCUS program will be used to decrease the financial strain on clients to provide free access to the vital help that they need. Funds will also help with operating expenses, program services and administrative costs. The Connecticut chapter of CHI is raising enough money to support at least two years of operations. Two years of operational funding will also enable CHI to successfully receive grant funding to further sustain the chapter in 2024 and beyond.
